When the PCD tool is used for ultra-precision cutting, the surface roughness of tool has a great influence on the workpiece roughness. The surface roughness of the general tool is higher than 1 to 2 grades of cutting the workpiece surface. And the influence of the surface roughness of the PCD tool is larger than that of the front surface. This is a breakthrough from the traditional point of view: the surface roughness of cutting tool must be lower than the surface roughness of 1 to 2 grades to be cut from the workpiece. To grind workpiece of surface roughness Ra0.01μm, the blade roughness itself must not be greater than Ra0. 01μm. The roughness of the front and rear cutter surface should not be higher than Ra0. 063μm.

Effect of PCD tool surface roughness on ultra-precision machining

It is concluded that the surface roughness of the PCD tool can be increased by 2 to 4 grades compared with the traditional view. Which can prolong its service life , save the high cost of repairing and grinding and make its use more widely.This will bring great social and economic benefits.
